The phrase “Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.” is one of the most famous quotations by Søren Kierkegaard, often called the father of existentialism.

Simple meaning : We understand the meaning of our life only after events have happened, but we have to make decisions without knowing the future.

Example

Imagine you fail an exam. At the time, it feels like a disaster. Years later, you realize that failure pushed you to study harder, choose a different career, or become a better person. Only looking back do you understand its value.

Why is this idea important?

Kierkegaard believed that:

Life has uncertainty. We cannot wait until everything is clear before acting. We must make choices with incomplete knowledge and discover their meaning later.

Main lesson : The past gives us understanding, but the future demands courage.
