Condemned to be free

August 7, 2026 | by aashishgautam265@gmail.com

“Condemned to be free” means that human beings are always free to choose, and therefore they are always responsible for the consequences of their choices. This famous idea given by Jean-Paul Sartre.

Sartre used the word “condemned” because we did not choose to be born, yet once we exist, we cannot escape making choices.

What does it mean?

Every day, you make choices:

1.Whether to study or procrastinate.

2. Whether to tell the truth or lie.

3. Whether to help someone or ignore them.

Even refusing to choose is itself a choice.

According to Sartre, you cannot escape freedom. That is why you are “condemned” to it.

Example

Imagine a student who says: “My parents forced me to study law.”

Sartre would reply: “You still chose to obey your parents. You could have chosen differently, even if that choice had difficult consequences.”

This means we are responsible not only for what we do but also for what we decide not to do.

Why is freedom a burden?

Freedom can be uncomfortable because:

1. We cannot blame fate, society, or God for every decision.

2. We must live with the consequences of our choices.

This responsibility creates what Sartre called anguish or existential anxiety.

Main lesson

Sartre’s message is: You are free, and because you are free, you are responsible for creating the meaning of your own life.

Instead of waiting for life to tell you who you are, your choices define who you become.
