Regression

August 6, 2026 | by aashishgautam265@gmail.com

In psychology, regression is a defense mechanism in which a person returns to an earlier, more childlike way of behaving when faced with stress, fear, or anxiety.

The concept was introduced by Sigmund Freud and later developed further by his daughter Anna Freud.

Examples

1.An adult who throws a temper tantrum when things do not go their way.

2. A college student who goes home after a stressful exam and wants their parents to take care of everything.

These behaviors are not deliberate. They are often an unconscious way of coping with emotional stress.

Why does regression happen?

When people experience strong anxiety, grief, fear, or pressure, their mind may temporarily fall back on behaviors that once provided comfort and security during childhood.

Other defense mechanisms

Freud also described several other defense mechanisms, including:

Repression – pushing painful thoughts out of awareness.

Denial – refusing to accept reality.

Projection – attributing your own feelings to someone else.

Rationalization – creating logical excuses for behavior.

Displacement – directing emotions toward a safer target.

So, regression is not about becoming less intelligent. It is temporarily reverting to earlier patterns of behavior as a way of coping with stress or emotional conflict.
