The placebo effect is when a person experiences a real improvement in symptoms because they expect a treatment to help, even when the treatment itself has no active medical ingredient.
Simple example
Imagine a person has a headache.
A doctor gives them a pill and says:
“This should help your headache.”
But the pill is actually a placebo—for example, a sugar pill with no active painkiller.
The person believes they received medicine, and their headache may genuinely feel better.
Expectation → Brain/body response → Change in experience
Why does it happen?
Your brain is not simply a passive receiver of information. Expectations can influence how you experience things such as pain, fatigue, anxiety, and other symptoms.
For example:
“This treatment will help me.”
can change how you perceive pain or discomfort.
But this doesn’t mean that thinking positively can cure every disease. The placebo effect has limits, and it should not be used as a substitute for necessary medical treatment.

1. Henry K. Beecher —
probably the most important name in the modern placebo-effect story.
In 1955, he published the famous paper “The Powerful Placebo.”He argued that placebos could produce substantial improvements in patients.
2. Fabrizio Benedetti
Studied the neuroscience of placebo effects. Showed how expectations and conditioning can influence physiological and brain responses.
