Reinforcement

August 6, 2026 | by aashishgautam265@gmail.com

Reinforcement means making a behavior more likely to happen again by giving a consequence after that behavior. It is a key concept in psychology, especially in the work of B. F. Skinner.

For example:

1. A child studies hard and gets praise from their parents. The praise encourages the child to study again. The praise is reinforcement.

2. An employee works well and receives a bonus. The bonus reinforces good performance.

There are two main types:

1. Positive reinforcement: You add something pleasant after a behavior.

Example: A student answers correctly and the teacher gives a chocolate.

Result: The student is more likely to answer correctly again.

2. Negative reinforcement: You remove something unpleasant after a behavior.

Example: You fasten your seatbelt, and the annoying beeping sound stops.

Result: You are more likely to wear your seatbelt in the future.

In simple words: Reinforcement = anything that increases the chance that a behavior will happen again.
