The Forgetting Curve explains how quickly we forget information after learning it. We usually forget a lot of information soon after learning it. After that, the rate of forgetting becomes slower. For example, you study 20 new words today. Tomorrow, you may remember only 10. After a week, you may remember only 6.
Revision can slow down forgetting. When you review information again and again, it becomes easier to remember. For example, if you study a topic today, revise it tomorrow, and then revise it again after a few days, you are more likely to remember it for a longer time. In simple words, without revision, memory fades; with regular revision, memory becomes stronger.
