Coping is the process of dealing with stress, problems, difficult emotions, or challenging situations.

Simple definition

Coping means the thoughts and actions we use to handle stress and difficulties.

For example:

  • After failing an exam, a student makes a new study plan instead of giving up.
  • Someone who feels stressed goes for a walk or talks to a trusted friend.
  • A person who loses a job updates their résumé and starts applying for new positions.

Types of coping

Psychologists Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman identified two major types:

  1. Problem-focused coping
    • Tries to solve the problem causing the stress.
    • Example: Studying more after getting poor grades.
  2. Emotion-focused coping
    • Tries to manage the emotional distress.
    • Example: Meditation, prayer, deep breathing, or talking to a friend

Healthy vs. unhealthy coping

Unhealthy coping:
