Embracing uncertainty

August 7, 2026 | by aashishgautam265@gmail.com

Embracing uncertainty means accepting that you cannot know or control everything, and still choosing to live, act, and make decisions despite that uncertainty.

Life is uncertain:

1.We don’t know what job we’ll have in five years.

2. We don’t know if a business will succeed.

3. We don’t know exactly what tomorrow will bring.

Instead of trying to eliminate all uncertainty, we learn to accept it and move forward.

Example

A student applies for a PhD.

They cannot know whether they will be accepted. If they wait until they are 100% certain, they may never apply.

By embracing uncertainty, they submit the application anyway and accept that the outcome is beyond their complete control.

Why is it important?

People who embrace uncertainty tend to:

1. Worry less about things they cannot control. Make decisions more confidently. Recover more easily from setbacks. Be more open to learning and new opportunities.

What philosophers say

1.Epictetus taught that we should focus on what is within our control and accept what is not.

2. Søren Kierkegaard argued that uncertainty is an unavoidable part of human existence and that meaningful choices require courage.

3. Nassim Nicholas Taleb emphasizes that uncertainty is a normal feature of the world and that resilience comes from preparing for the unexpected rather than expecting perfect prediction.

In short: Embracing uncertainty is the ability to accept that the future is never completely predictable and to continue living, learning, and acting with courage despite that fact.
