Denial

August 25, 2026 | by aashishgautam265@gmail.com

Denial is a psychological defense mechanism in which a person refuses to accept or acknowledge something that is difficult, painful, or threatening, even when there is evidence for it.

It is strongly associated with Sigmund Freud and later psychoanalytic thinkers.

In simple words: “I don’t want to accept this reality, so I tell myself it isn’t true.”

Simple example

A student gets very poor marks.

The teacher shows the result, but the student says:

“The teacher must have made a mistake. I didn’t actually fail.”

If the evidence clearly shows that they failed, refusing to accept it is denial.

Real-life example

Someone spends much more money than they can afford.

Their family says:

“You’re having a financial problem.”

They respond:

“I don’t have any problem. I can manage it.
