In the 1870s, people relied on gas lamps and candles to light their homes after sunset. These methods, however, were expensive, dangerous, and difficult to manage. As soon as the sun set, people often stopped working, and students couldn’t study due to the lack of proper light.
Edison observed these challenges and conceived the idea of inventing a light bulb to provide a longer, safer, and cheaper source of light. With this purpose in mind, he set out to lightning the world.
In his words, “We will make electricity so cheap that only the rich will use candles”. His journey to create the bulb was not easy—it was filled with over 10,000 failed attempts. But in 1879, after countless experiments, Edison successfully invented the incandescent light bulb.
While most people would have quit after five or ten failures, Edison’s passion kept him going. He didn’t see his failures as setbacks; instead, he viewed them as stepping stones to success. He famously remarked, “I have not failed; I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
His love for his invention was so deep that the idea of giving up never crossed his mind. Today, thanks to Edison’s persistence, we can work and study at night just as easily as during the day.
His invention revolutionized the way we live, proving how passion and purpose can not only lead to personal success but also have a lasting impact on the world.
