Has Democracy Lost its Soul

June 26, 2026 | by aashishgautam265@gmail.com

Today, we live in what is called a democratic state. Yet, in many ways, it has become deeply undemocratic. That may sound paradoxical, but to understand why, we must compare the purpose of democracy with the reality we see today.

Democracy stands on three pillars: Liberty, Equality, and Justice.

Liberty is the soul of democracy. It gives people the freedom to live according to their own choices, as long as they do not harm others. It allows a person to choose their profession, express their ideas, and shape their own destiny.

This was impossible under monarchies and dictatorships. In those systems, a person’s occupation was often decided by birth, caste, class, or gender. In medieval Europe, feudalism divided society into feudal lords and serfs. Serfs had almost no freedom. India had a similar reality. A person’s destiny was tied to their caste from birth. Those who suffered the most were Dalits, whose lives were reduced to serving the upper castes. Their occupation was decided before they were even born.

Democracy broke these mindless chains. Liberty also gave people the courage to think independently and criticize what is wrong—even if the person in power is the Prime Minister, the President, or any other authority. Simply put, the purpose of liberty is to give every human being a meaningful life.

Now let’s move to Equality.

The purpose of equality is to destroy every wall of hierarchy. A rickshaw puller should have the same dignity as a millionaire. Equality tells us that every human being deserves equal respect and equal treatment before the law.

Finally, there is Justice.

Justice means punishing the guilty and protecting the innocent. It must be delivered without fear, favour, or discrimination. That is the very foundation of justice.

These three principles have the power to make the world a better place. Sadly, today they exist more as ideals than as realities.

Let’s begin again with Liberty.

Ask yourself: Are you truly free to choose your profession? In many places, jobs are decided through corruption. Imagine someone who dreams of becoming a professor. They have all the qualifications, but the selection committee has already decided whom to hire—the person with political connections or the one who paid a bribe.

That is why many people are afraid to dream. Deep down, they know that liberty exists only on paper, while the real game is played through corruption and influence.

The same is true for freedom of speech. People know what is wrong, but many remain silent. They fear for their own safety and for their families. They know that if they speak up, they may face pressure not only from the government but also from an intolerant crowd.

Now consider Equality.

If equality is real, why is inequality growing? A tiny group controls most of the nation’s wealth, while millions struggle for the basics of life. Many cannot access proper healthcare, quality education, clean drinking water, or even two meals a day. They are forced to live in slums and fight every day for survival.

This inequality goes beyond money—it has reached the value of human life itself.

I remember reading about an incident where an ambulance was stopped because a high-ranking official’s convoy had to pass. The patient inside the ambulance died. If every life has equal value, then why does the life of an ordinary citizen seem so cheap?

Finally, let’s look at Justice.

When I was in Class 11, I read about a poor man who was arrested in 1976 on theft charges. The shocking part was that he remained in prison until 2005—without a trial.

At the same time, many rapists continue to walk freely. Women are still unsafe because the legal system often fails to protect them or deliver justice. Recently, I read about the rape of a Dalit girl.

Ask yourself: In a truly democratic society, should women have to live with this level of fear?

Now think again.

Are we really living in a democratic world, or are we living in a society that calls itself democratic while becoming increasingly undemocratic?
