Hughie Erskine is a very handsome and kind young man, but he is poor.He has no job and no way to earn money. Even though people like him, he cannot become successful.

Hughie is in love with Laura Merton.Laura also loves him, but her father says Hughie can only marry her if he gets £10,000.Hughie feels sad because he has no money.

One day, Hughie visits his friend Alan Trevor, who is a painter.Alan is painting a picture of a very poor beggar. The beggar looks old, weak, and miserable.

Hughie feels sorry for the beggar.He thinks the beggar is truly poor, so he gives him one gold coin (a sovereign).This is a lot of money for Hughie.

Later, Hughie learns the truth.The beggar is not poor at all.He is actually Baron Hausberg, one of the richest men in Europe, dressed like a beggar just to be painted.

Hughie feels embarrassed and foolish.

The next day, a man comes to Hughie with a letter from the Baron.Inside the letter is a cheque for £10,000 — exactly the amount Hughie needs to marry Laura.

The Baron gives this money because Hughie showed kindness without knowing who he was helping.

Hughie and Laura get married happily.Everyone agrees that Hughie is a true “model millionaire”, not because of money, but because of his kind heart ❤️.
