In 1937, while serving in the Danish Royal forces, Stig Guldberg was caught in a terrible explosion. His injuries were devastating—his skull was shattered, his lungs were badly damaged, one thigh was torn apart, and both his hands were lost. Doctors and nurses believed that even if he survived, his life would be worse than death.

But Stig Guldberg refused to accept that fate.
