Shun Rituals, Practise Love

June 4, 2026 | by aashishgautam265@gmail.com

There once lived a very disciplined and austere man. He followed a strict rule of fasting and would not eat or drink anything while the sun was in the sky.

People admired his dedication. As if in recognition of his devotion, a bright star appeared above a nearby hill. The star was visible even during the daytime, and everyone saw it as a sign of divine blessing.

One day, the man decided to climb the hill where the star shone. As he began his journey, a young village girl insisted on accompanying him.

A Difficult Choice

The day was hot, and after walking for some time, both became very thirsty.

The man told the girl to drink some water. However, the child refused. She said that she would drink only if he drank too.

The man faced a difficult choice. He did not want to break his fast, but he also could not bear to see the little girl suffer.

After much hesitation, he chose compassion over ritual. He ate and drank so that the child would do the same and remain healthy.

A Beautiful Surprise

After breaking his fast, the man felt worried. He feared that the heavenly star would disappear because he had failed to keep his religious discipline.

For a long time, he avoided looking at the sky. Finally, when he gathered the courage to look up, he was amazed. Instead of seeing one star, he saw two bright stars shining above the hill.

The Meaning of the Story

The second star symbolized that his act of kindness was more pleasing than his act of fasting. By helping the child, he had shown the true spirit of religion.

Rituals, fasting, and spiritual practices have value. They help develop self-control and discipline. However, they are only means to a higher goal.

The ultimate purpose of all spiritual practices is to cultivate love, compassion, and concern for others.

The Moral of the Story

This story teaches us that love is greater than ritual. Religious practices are meaningful only when they make us kinder and more compassionate human beings.

A ritual performed without love has little value. But an act of genuine kindness can become a true expression of spirituality.

The highest form of worship is not merely following rules. It is caring for others and responding to their needs with a loving heart.
