Today, while reading a chapter on liberty, I came across Isaiah Berlin’s idea of positive liberty, and it immediately struck me as the true form of freedom.
Berlin defines positive liberty as self-mastery — the ability to exercise control over one’s desires, emotions, and impulses. I strongly feel that this idea captures the highest goal of human life. To be truly free is not merely to act without external constraints, but to gain mastery over one’s own lower self.
Human life is a constant inner struggle. On one side stands our higher self — the source of reason, love, kindness, and moral goodness. On the other side is our lower self — driven by impulsiveness, anger, hatred, and desire.
If we observe ourselves carefully, we can recognize a guiding voice within us that directs us toward what is right and restrains us from what is wrong. Yet, there exists another opposing voice that tempts us with the idea: “We only live once; do whatever you want; there is no good or bad.” This voice pulls human beings downward and distances them from their true potential.
From my own experience, I want to say that when we follow this negative voice, we only harm ourselves. In the end, we gain nothing but regret.
The time has come for us to move toward self-mastery. We must overcome laziness, procrastination, and selfishness to become masters of ourselves. This mindset alone can give us true joy and success — both material and spiritual.
