Its basic meaning is: Knowledge has little value unless it is put into practice.
Many thinkers expressed this idea in different ways:
- Aristotle argued that virtue is developed by doing, not merely by knowing. We become just by performing just actions.
- Confucius taught that learning should be accompanied by practice. One of his famous sayings is: “To learn and at due times to practice what one has learned, is that not a pleasure?”
- Mahatma Gandhi is often credited with the saying: “An ounce of practice is worth more than tons of preaching.
Simple example
Suppose you read 100 books about kindness but never help anyone. Your knowledge exists, but it has not become part of your life. If you help even one person, your knowledge has been transformed into action.
Main lesson
True knowledge changes the way we think and the way we act. Knowledge without action remains incomplete.
