The nature of the mind is double-faced. First, it pushes us to do wrong acts, and then it repents after seeing the consequences of those actions.
Let us understand the trick of the mind through the example of gambling and drinking alcohol, which destroy the peace of world.
The mind says, “Let’s play a small shot of gambling. What’s the harm in this? It’s just for fun.”
Then the person starts to play, and mainly two consequences happen: either the person wins or loses.
If the person wins, the mind says, “Let’s play more. Today is my lucky day. I will definitely become rich today.”
If they lose, the mind again plays its trick: “Don’t stop now. First recover what you have lost. After that, you can quit forever.”
In both situations—whether one wins or loses—the result is the same. The mind never allows the person to stop. It constantly creates new justifications to continue.
The same pattern can be seen in daily life. Whether a person is happy or sad, the mind offers the same suggestion: “Just one drink,” or “just one cigarette.” The reason may change, but the outcome does not. It never remains just one time.
Any person can observe the same pattern in their life. Whatever bad habits you feel have become part of your personality, they all started just once. But ask yourself—does the last time ever really come?
