Demosthenes: A greatest orator

Demosthenes was the son of a wealthy sword maker. From birth, he had a weak body, which made him shy, and to make matters worse, he stammered while speaking. This took away his confidence to face the world. At the age of seven, his father passed away, leaving him in the care of three guardians responsible for managing his vast property and ensuring his education and well-being.

But destiny had other plans. His guardians betrayed his father’s trust, seized his wealth, and refused to pay his tutors. This deprived him of an education, which held great value in Athens.

We, too, often face hardships in life, but while most people surrender to fate, Demosthenes chose a brave path.

One day, he witnessed a charismatic orator, Callistratus, delivering a fiery speech in the Athenian Assembly. With his powerful words, Callistratus dismantled his opponents’ arguments and emerged victorious. This moment became the turning point in Demosthenes’ life. Inspired by the orator’s brilliance, he resolved to master the art of speech to reclaim what rightfully belonged to him from his deceitful guardians.

Determined to overcome his weaknesses, he took radical steps. To correct his stammer, he practiced speaking with small pebbles in his mouth. To develop a powerful voice, he trained by delivering speeches near the seashore, forcing his voice to rise above the crashing waves. To avoid distractions, he isolated himself in an underground cave and even shaved his head to suppress the urge to socialize. He poured his heart and soul into self-studying law, reasoning, and logic relentlessly to sharpening his mind.

After five years of unwavering dedication, he finally confronted his oppressors. He filed a lawsuit against them. His opponents, powerful and well-connected, hired the best lawyers to defend them. But this time, fate bowed before Demosthenes. With the mastery of his voice and intellect, he dismantled their every argument and emerged victorious. Justice had triumphed.

This is not just a victory of one man but a triumph of human will and dedication. When asked about the secret to his success, he uttered three powerful words: Action. Action. Action.
