prafulla Chandra Ray : Great Scientist

March 4, 2026 | by aashishgautam265@gmail.com

Prafulla Chandra Ray was a great Indian scientist who dedicated his life to serving the nation.

After completing his higher education in chemistry in England, Prafulla Babu returned to India and began searching for a job. He was appointed Assistant Professor at Presidency College with a monthly salary of 250 rupees. He knew that English teachers with similar qualifications were appointed to higher posts and paid more than 1,000 rupees.

He felt this was unfair. To protest, he complained to Mr. Croft, the head of the Education Department. Mr. Croft replied bluntly that no one was forcing him to take the job and that he could prove his ability elsewhere. Although insulted, Prafulla Babu accepted the situation and decided to prove himself through his work.

At Presidency College, he devoted himself to teaching and research. He focused especially on giving practical knowledge of chemistry to his students. He also helped poor but talented students financially so they could continue their education. Because he spent most of his money helping others, he had no savings.

In 1906, with only ₹800, he established Bengal Chemical and Pharmaceutical Works. His aim was to promote Indian industry and provide jobs to needy students. At first, it was very small, but because of the quality of the medicines and his dedication, it grew into a large and successful factory within ten to twelve years.

Many students were able to complete their education because of this support, and several later became famous scientists. He encouraged students not just to seek jobs but to start industries for national progress.

Although he earned nearly 1,000 rupees per month later in life and also earned from his scientific work, he lived very simply. He spent only about ₹40 per month on himself and donated the rest to students and social causes. He never married and chose to live a simple life devoted to science and service. Even though he was respected worldwide, his clothing and lifestyle remained modest.

He believed in action, not just words. During a severe flood in Bengal, he personally went with his students to help the victims. His sincere efforts inspired many others to contribute generously.

In 1916, when he left Presidency College to join the Science College of Calcutta University, students honored him and called him their guide, philosopher, and friend. In his emotional reply, he said that his true wealth was his students, just as Cornelia, a Roman woman, had called her sons her jewels.

He wrote the famous book History of Hindu Chemistry, which highlighted the achievements of ancient Indian scientists. The book became well known in India and abroad.
