Crutches to Olympic Gold : Wilma Rudolph

Wilma Rudolph was born into a poor family in Tennessee and was the 20th of 22 children. When she was just four years old, she suffered from double pneumonia, scarlet fever, and polio.
These illnesses left her left leg weak and twisted. Doctors said she might never walk again.
But Wilma’s mother refused to accept this. Every week she travelled miles to the hospital and massaged Wilma’s leg at home every day.
With years of treatment and iron braces, Wilma learned to walk again — first with help, then on her own.
Wilma wanted more. She joined basketball at school, and that led her to running. Wilma worked harder than anyone — waking early, travelling long distances for practice, and never giving up, even when she was tired or discouraged.
In 1960, at the Rome Olympics, the girl who once struggled to walk shocked the world. She ran like a champion and won three gold medals — 100m, 200m, and 4×100m relay — becoming the fastest woman on Earth.
