This story is about a young woman named Mathilde Loisel. She is pretty and dreams of a rich and luxurious life. However, she is born into a poor family and gets married to a simple clerk. Mathilde is unhappy with her ordinary life. She wants beautiful dresses, expensive jewelry, and to be admired by rich people.
One day, her husband brings home an invitation to a grand dance party at the Minister of Education’s house. Her husband is excited, but Mathilde becomes upset because she has no fine dress or jewelry to wear. Her husband spends his savings to buy her a new dress. To complete her look, Mathilde borrows a diamond necklace from her rich friend, Madame Forestier.
At the party, Mathilde is the most beautiful woman. Everyone notices her, and she feels proud and happy. But when she returns home, she discovers that the necklace is missing. She and her husband search everywhere, but they cannot find it.
Afraid to tell the truth, they decide to buy a new necklace just like the lost one. It is very expensive, so they borrow a lot of money. For the next ten years, Mathilde and her husband live a hard life. Mathilde does all the housework herself and loses her beauty due to poverty and struggle.
After ten years, when all the debts are finally paid, Mathilde meets Madame Forestier again and tells her the truth about the necklace. Madame Forestier is shocked and says that the necklace was not real. It was only an imitation worth a small amount of money.
Moral of the Story
The story teaches us that pride, show-off, and desire for luxury can bring suffering. Honesty and contentment are more valuable than appearance and wealth. A small mistake can completely change a person’s life.
