John Baker was a young runner from Albuquerque who became one of the fastest milers in the United States. In school he was small and not considered athletic, but when he joined the track team, he discovered a hidden strength.

He would run with great determination and kept improving. Soon he broke many records and shocked everyone with his victories. People started calling him “Upset John” because he always defeated stronger runners.

After college, he became a coach at Aspen Elementary School. He deeply cared for the children and always told them to “do your best.” The kids loved him because he treated everyone with kindness and respect.

At age 24, John found out he had a serious cancer and only a few months to live. He became very sad and even thought of ending his life. But when he remembered the children he coached, he changed his mind. He decided to spend whatever time he had left helping them.

Even while in pain, he continued coaching — including children with disabilities and a girls’ running team called the Duke City Dashers. He gave them trophies made from his own old medals and encouraged them every day.

John Baker died in November 1970, at age 26. After his death, the Dashers won the national meet in his honor.
