Purna, a devoted disciple of Mahatma Buddha, studied the teachings of religion under him. After completing his studies, he sought permission to go to a distant kingdom to preach the Dhamma. The people of that kingdom were known for being extremely cruel and hard-hearted.
Buddha asked Purna, “How would you feel if the people there abused and insulted you? ”Purna replied, “I would still consider them good, because they only abused me—they did not slap me.”
Buddha then asked, “And what if they slap and beat you?” Purna replied, “Even then I would think of them as virtuous, because they did not attack me with a weapon.”
Buddha asked again, “And if they attack you with a weapon?”. Purna answered, “I would consider them my friends, because they did not kill me.”
Finally Buddha asked, “And what if they kill you?”Purna said calmly, “If they kill me, they will free me from this world of suffering. In that way, they will be doing me a favour.”
Hearing these wise and compassionate answers, Lord Buddha was deeply pleased. He said, “A true sage is one who does not see the faults of others under any circumstance.”
