In our society, justice is based on partiality. If a person is murdered, the perpetrator is sentenced to death. But those who kill and eat countless animals every day face no punishment.
Those who kill chickens and camels—sometimes in the name of protein, sometimes in the name of ritual—I want to ask, why do they face no punishment?
Aren’t they also committing murder?
Then why this discrimination? Doesn’t the life of an animal have any value? Doesn’t it feel pain? Doesn’t it want to live?
Both Buddha and Mahavira laid great emphasis on non-violence—that is, not killing any living being.
They did not say that only humans should not be killed; they declared that taking the life of any living creature is a sin.
I believe it is a shameful stain on humanity that we call ourselves human and yet kill, cook, and eat other beings.
This is my opinion: every country’s parliament should enact a law that makes the needless killing of any animal a crime—punishable by the same penalty as killing a human being.
