Problem solving means finding a way to deal with a problem or reach a goal. First, we understand what the problem is. Then we think about possible solutions and choose one.
For example, you have an exam tomorrow but have not finished studying. The problem is lack of preparation. You may make a study plan, choose important topics, and start studying.
Psychologists study how people use different methods to solve problems. Gestalt psychologists, such as Wolfgang Köhler, showed that people can sometimes solve a problem through insight—a sudden understanding of the answer. Other problems need trial and error, rules, or step-by-step thinking.
For example, if a door lock does not open, you may try different keys until you find the correct one.
