Emotional intelligence means the ability to understand and manage your own emotions and understand the emotions of other people.
Main thinkers associated with Emotional Intelligence
1. Peter Salovey & John Mayer
They defined EI as the ability to perceive, understand, use, and manage emotions. Their model is often called the Ability Model.
2. Daniel Goleman
Made emotional intelligence popular through his book Emotional Intelligence (1995).
He proposed five major components:
Self-awareness – knowing your own emotions.
Self-regulation – controlling your emotional reactions.
Motivation – using emotions to achieve goals.
Empathy – understanding others’ feelings.
Social skills – dealing effectively with people.
3. Howard Gardner
His Theory of Multiple Intelligences influenced the development of EI.
He proposed intrapersonal intelligence (understanding yourself) and interpersonal intelligence (understanding others).
Simple example
If someone insults you and you immediately become angry and fight, you are not managing your emotion well.
If you recognize that you are angry, control your reaction, understand why the person acted that way, and respond calmly, that shows emotional intelligence.
