Repression

August 25, 2026 | by aashishgautam265@gmail.com

Repression is a psychological defense mechanism in which a person unconsciously pushes distressing thoughts, memories, or feelings out of conscious awareness.

The concept is strongly associated with Sigmund Freud.

n simple language: “Something is too painful or uncomfortable to face, so the mind keeps it outside conscious awareness.”

Simple example

Imagine someone experienced a very frightening event as a child.

Years later, they may have little conscious memory of the event, while certain situations or emotions still make them uncomfortable
