Projection is a psychological defense mechanism in which a person attributes their own unwanted feelings, thoughts, or qualities to someone else.
The concept is associated with Sigmund Freud and later developed within psychoanalytic theory.
In simple words:
“I have a feeling or quality that I don’t want to accept in myself, so I see it in another person.”
Simple example
Imagine someone is very jealous of their friend.
Instead of admitting: “I’m jealous of my friend.”
They say: “My friend is jealous of me.”
Projection in relationships
Suppose someone is dishonest but strongly believes their partner is cheating.
They constantly accuse their partner:
“You’re hiding something from me!”
Sometimes this can be projection—but not every accusation is projection. There may be real evidence. We should look at the evidence before applying the concept.
