Insecure Attachment

August 20, 2026 | by aashishgautam265@gmail.com

Insecure attachment means a person has learned, usually through early relationships, that other people may not always be reliable, safe, or emotionally available.

In very simple language:

“I want closeness, but I’m not completely sure that I can trust you to be there for me.”

example

Imagine a child wants comfort from their parent.

If the parent is sometimes loving and sometimes completely unavailable, the child may become uncertain:

“Will my parent comfort me this time?”

The child may become very anxious when the parent leaves and strongly seek them when they return.

This is one pattern of insecure attachment.

In adults

Insecure attachment can sometimes appear as:

Anxious pattern:”

Does this person really love me? Why haven’t they replied? Are they going to leave me?”

Avoidant pattern:

“I don’t need anyone. I don’t want to depend on people.”

Disorganized pattern:

“I want closeness, but when someone gets close, I also feel afraid or uncomfortable.”

Real-life example

Suppose your friend doesn’t reply for several hours.

A person with more secure expectations might think:

“They’re probably busy. They’ll reply later.”

Someone with an anxious attachment pattern might think:

“Maybe they’re angry with me. Maybe they don’t care about me anymore.”

The event is the same, but the person’s expectations about relationships can influence how they interpret it.
