Author: O. Henry
Theme: Hope, sacrifice, and the power of love and art.
The story takes place in a small part of Greenwich Village, New York, where two young women, Sue and Johnsy, live together in a tiny flat. They are not just roommates—they are best friends and artists, both trying to build a career in painting.
One cold winter, a terrible disease called pneumonia spreads across the city. Sadly, Johnsy catches it.
She becomes weak, pale, and hopeless. The doctor tells Sue that Johnsy’s will to live is fading — and if she doesn’t find hope again, no medicine can save her.
🍂 Johnsy’s Belief – Counting the Falling Leaves
From her bed, Johnsy can see an ivy vine climbing the brick wall outside her window. Day by day, as the cold wind blows, the leaves keep falling. Johnsy, lying weakly in her bed, starts to believe that her life is tied to the vine.
She whispers to Sue,
“When the last leaf falls, I’ll die.”
Sue tries to cheer her up, telling her that this is just nonsense, that leaves don’t decide our fate.
But Johnsy doesn’t listen. She has lost all hope. She keeps counting the falling leaves — one more leaf gone, one day closer to death.
Sue cries silently, not knowing how to save her friend.
🎨 The Old Artist – Behrman’s Dream
Downstairs lives an old man named Behrman — a poor artist who has never created his masterpiece.
He loves Sue and Johnsy like his own daughters. When Sue tells him about Johnsy’s strange belief, Behrman is shocked and angry.
He says,
“Such foolishness! A leaf cannot make someone die!”
But inside, he feels deep compassion. He wants to help.
🌧️ The Stormy Night – A Silent Sacrifice
That night, the wind howls. Rain beats against the window. Johnsy looks outside and sees only one last leaf left on the ivy vine. She believes it will fall by morning, and that will be her end.
But when the morning light comes…🌿 The last leaf is still there. It hasn’t moved. It stands strong against the wind.
Johnsy looks at it in wonder. Something changes inside her heart. She says softly,
“It’s a sin to want to die. That leaf has taught me to live.”
Slowly, she regains her strength. Her eyes fill with hope again. She begins to eat, talk, and dream of painting once more.
💔 The Twist – The True Masterpiece
A few days later, Sue comes to Johnsy with tears in her eyes. She tells her that Behrman has died of pneumonia.
He became sick after going out in the cold and rain the night when the last leaf should have fallen.
Then Sue says softly,
“Behrman painted that last leaf on the wall. It was his masterpiece.”
Johnsy is speechless. The leaf that gave her hope and life was not real —it was a painting — created by an old man who gave up his own life to save hers.
đź’« Moral of the Story
1. Never lose hope, even when life feels empty. One “last leaf” of courage can change everything.
2. Love and sacrifice give true meaning to life.
3. A real masterpiece is not painted on canvas — it’s painted through kindness and compassion.
